Acute Pain & Sports Injuries

Acute Pain & Sports Injuries

I provide expert physiotherapy support for children and adolescents experiencing musculoskeletal pain or injuries, whether it’s related to sports, physical activity, or occurs without a clear cause. Some children develop hip, knee, back, or ankle pain during everyday activities or growth, while others may have sprains, strains, or overuse injuries from sports and play. My goal is to help your child reduce pain, recover safely, regain confidence, and return to the activities they enjoy.

Common Sports, Activity-Related, and Musculoskeletal Issues

Children and teens can experience pain or injury for a variety of reasons. Some common conditions I assess and treat include:

  • Sports and activity-related injuries
  • Sprains and strains (ankle, knee, wrist, shoulder)
  • Ligament injuries (ACL, MCL sprains)
  • Muscle injuries and bruising
  • Fractures or growth plate injuries
  • Overuse injuries such as shin splints, Osgood-Schlatter disease, Sever’s disease, and tendonitis
  • Postural or technique-related injuries from repetitive movements
  • Pain without a clear injury
  • Hip, knee, ankle, or back pain
  • Pain during walking, climbing stairs, or playground activities
  • Pain that comes and goes or isn’t linked to a fall or accident
  • Growing pains affecting sleep or participation in school and play
  • Balance, coordination, or movement difficulties that may contribute to pain or risk of injury

My Approach to Pediatric Physiotherapy

I understand that pain and injuries can be stressful for both children and parents. My approach is:

  • Child-centred and playful: Sessions are designed to engage your child and encourage active participation, tailored to their age and interests.
  • Evidence-based rehabilitation: I use strategies grounded in current best practice for pediatric musculoskeletal health.
  • Holistic assessment: I assess the injured area along with underlying factors such as strength, flexibility, posture, coordination, and movement patterns.
  • Preventative focus: I provide strategies to reduce the risk of future pain or injury, including safe movement techniques, strengthening, and functional conditioning.

What to Expect in a Physiotherapy Session

A typical session may include:

  1. Comprehensive assessment: Reviewing your child’s history, current symptoms, and activity levels.
  1. Movement and functional testing: Assessing strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, and sport- or play-specific movements.
  1. Individualised treatment plan: This may include exercises, manual therapy, education on pain management, and guidance for home or school activities.
  1. Progression and return to activity: Planning a safe return to sport, play, or everyday movement while regaining confidence and preventing recurrence.

Supporting Children, Teens, and Parents

I create a supportive environment for both children and parents. Pain and injuries can affect confidence, participation, and enjoyment of activity. I work closely with families to provide clear guidance, reassurance, and practical strategies for recovery and long-term musculoskeletal health.
