School and Home Visits

School and Home Visits

School and home visits offer an opportunity to understand how a child’s movement skills are supporting them — or creating challenges — in their everyday environments. Observing a child where they learn, play, and move can provide valuable insight that is not always visible in a clinic setting.

These visits allow physiotherapy support to be tailored not only to the child, but also to the contexts and demands of daily life, supporting participation, confidence, and wellbeing.

School Visits

School visits can be particularly helpful for gaining a clearer picture of how a child is managing movement demands within the school environment. This may include participation in physical education (PE), playground play, classroom movement, transitions, and access to equipment.

When children experience movement difficulties at school, this can sometimes show up as:

  • Difficulty participating in PE or playground games
  • Avoidance of physical activity
  • Fatigue, frustration, or reduced confidence
  • Changes in mood, behaviour, or engagement

Observing a child in school can help identify how physical demands, sensory input, and environmental factors may be impacting participation. This insight allows for practical, realistic guidance to be shared with teachers and supporting staff, with the aim of helping the child feel more capable, included, and confident at school.

School visits also provide an opportunity to:

  • Collaborate with teachers and support staff
  • Suggest adaptations to activities or expectations
  • Review and optimise school equipment or set-up
  • Support inclusion while minimising disruption to school time

For some children, receiving physiotherapy support within the school setting — with a parent and/or teacher present — can be a comfortable and effective option.

Home Visits

Home visits may be helpful where a child is not yet comfortable attending the clinic, or where support is best delivered within the home environment. This may include working with familiar spaces, routines, or equipment already available at home.

Home visits allow therapy to be:

  • Child-centred and familiar
  • Embedded into everyday routines
  • Practical and meaningful for families

They can also be useful when practising specific skills that are best addressed at home, or when parents would like guidance that fits naturally into daily life.
